Breaking Down Active Professional Athletes Who Were Born in New York

Our friends at Rukkus recently broke down every hometown from every active professional athlete from the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and MLS. We thought it would be interesting to find out where in New York these athletes come from and where they went to high school. Before we dive into the New York athletes, let’s take a look into what their research discovered on a broader scale.

All Five Sports: 73.93% of professional athletes were born in the United States.

Behind the U.S. is Canada at 8.24% followed by the Dominican Republic.

NFL: 97.155% of athletes were born in the U.S.

MLB: 69.55% of athletes were born in the U.S., 12.05% in the Dominican republic, 7.82% in Venezuela.

NBA: 75.17% of athletes were born in the U.S.

NHL: 24.4% of athletes were born in the U.S., 48.28%  in Canada, 8.89% in Sweden.

MLS: 48.07% of athletes were born in the U.S.

Athletes From New York

All Five Sports: New York ranks 7th with 3.34% of American athletes born in New York. California is the leader with 14.38%.

NFL: New York ranks 15th with 2.14% of American NFL players coming from New York. California and Florida are tied with the lead with 12.19%.

MLB: New York ranks 6th with 3.18% of American MLB players coming from New York. California is the leader with 20.69%.

NBA: New York ranks 3rd with 5.74% of American NBA players coming from New York. California is the leader with 14.2%.

NHL: New York ranks 3rd with 11.41% of American NHL players coming from New York. Minnesota is the leader with 17.93%.

MLS: New York ranks 4th with 5.57% of American MLS players coming from New York. California is the leader with 22.65%.

Quick Facts

When you break it down per capita (100,000 residents), New York has a .6112410461 rating

Borough with most athletes: Brooklyn with 12

The NFL and NBA both have 14 athletes

There are 37 athletes from the five boroughs, 74 from outside the boroughs, for a total of 111

Breaking down athletes from the five boroughs and outside by sport:

NFL: 14/33 = 47

MLB: 6/15 = 21

NBA: 14/4 = 18

NHL: 1/10 = 11

MLS: 2/12 = 14

Lincoln High School in Brooklyn has the most professional athletes with three, two of them play for New York teams: Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn Nets), Ishaq Williams (New York Giants), and Lance Stephenson (Minnesota Timberwolves). Whitehead’s home court of the Barclays Center is only 13 miles away from where he played high school ball at Lincoln — a 20 minute drive or 15 stops on the Q train.

All-Star Appearances

There are 16 athletes who have been named to at least one All-Star Game:

NBA: Carmelo Anthony, Joakim Noah, Rudy Gay, Kemba Walker, Andre Drummond, and Metta World Peace

NFL: Rob Gronkowski, Chandler Jones, Devin McCourty, Brandon Albert, and Latavius Murray

NHL: Patrick Kane, Dustin Brown, and Jimmy Howard

MLB: Dellin Betances and Joe Panik

Championships

When it comes to bringing home the rings, the Patriots help the NFL bring home the most. Here are the athletes who have won a professional championship:

NFL: Rob Gronkowski and Devin McCourty (Super Bowl XLIX & Super Bowl LI), Dion Lewis (Super Bowl LI), and Chandler Jones (Super Bowl XLIX)

NBA: Metta World Peace (2010 Lakers) and Danny Green (2014 Spurs)

NHL: Patrick Kane (2010, 2013, 2015 Blackhawks) and Dustin Brown (2012 and 2014 Kings)

MLB: Joe Panik (2014 Giants)

Youngest: Tyler Adams of the New York Red Bulls (18)

Oldest: Metta World Peace of the Los Angeles Lakers (37)

So let’s see where they all come from.

**Note – We collected most of our data from Rukkus’ research. Their source is Stats.com. For the most part, these are where the athletes were born, not grew up. For example, Carmelo Anthony was born in Brooklyn, but grew up and played youth basketball in Baltimore. On the other hand, Latavius Murray was born in Florida, but grew up and went to school in Onondaga County.
