The Giants are 0-2 and fans are in a panic.
But before that, fans were excited to forget the Cowboys Week 1 loss and get to .500. Unfortunately, my Giants Week 2 recap from the seats of MetLife, is not a happy one.
I had a chance to see the New York Giants and Detroit Lions face off Monday night in East Rutherford, New Jersey last night. I had fantastic seats for this let down of an evening. The crowd was fantastic from the start of the kickoff to the last snap of the game. It was absolutely electric. Although the crowd was cheering loud, they also booed and booed loud! Ben McAdoo’s play calls were booed all night long for many reasons. Fans were nothing but annoyed with his style of offense.
Although the highest paid player in the NFL Matthew Stafford was held to 122 yards, the Giants found a way to start the season 0-2. With Odell Beckham Jr. back in the lineup, Eli Manning didn’t have too bad of a night going 22-32 with 239 yards and a touchdown. In fact, there were a few plays where Eli looked like the old Eli and the crowd responded positively. But, it was his interception on the Giants 30 and the delay of game penalty on the Lions 2 yard line that were crucial plays in the game.
Stop me if you heard this before…
The play calling was brutal for the Giants once again. Check downs on 3rd and 13, draws on 3rd and 6, and lets not forget the check-down to Shane Vereen on 4th and 3. The offensive line for the Giants is absolutely pitiful. Instead of spending money on Brandon Marshall’s dropped passes, it could have been spent on an offensive lineman, such as Andrew Whitworth or TJ Lang. The offense has not scored 20 points in its last 8 contests.
As for the Giants defense, it has looked sharp through 2 games, though one SBNY contributor felt differently about the Giants D. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie led the defense with 11 tackles last night. Special teams struggled last night giving up the nail in the coffin; the Lions ran back an 88 yard punt return to seal the victory. Ben McAdoo criticized Manning badly in a post game interview saying “Sloppy quarterback play.” The Giants head into Philadelphia next week with an 0-2 record in a MUST win game. Expect the Giants to come out on fire next week rolling over the Eagles.
Projection: 35-17 Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. will explode in what should be his first healthy game.
